Day 38: 5/1/21

Today we left Mojave, CA around 9:30am. Mary Helen, the trail angel who had given us a ride into Mojave, have us a ride back to the trail!

There were still a few beers in the cooler that Apple Jack left the other day, so we each helped ourselves to one.

After hanging out at the trailhead for a bit, we finally started our hike. There were lots of windmills and of course, lots of wind!

For scale, I took a picture of Sean with one of the windmills. He is the dot on the right bottom side of the windmill.

We descended down lots of switchbacks until we reached a road where we ended up getting Gatorade and lemon bar from group of hikers who were just out hiking for the day. Thanks so much!

Around 2pm we reached the Highway 58 overpass. We took a break for a half hour and then resumed our hike by the highway for some time.

Eventually, the trail turned away from the highway and we began to climb again.

As we climbed the wind became harsher. During the last 50-60 miles we’ve encountered a lot of wind, but for the first time today I had to stop hiking multiple times and just stand in place while the wind gusted. The wind got worse as we climbed.

We decided to stop early and make camp in an alcove of joshua trees. Per our Guthooks app, it was the most sheltered campsite on the mountain. We’re glad we made camp here, too, because we found out that there is a wind advisory tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully, some of the wind will die down tomorrow.

I camped in that very Joshua Grove. The wind was so bad we had to crawl. Good times.

It was a pleasure to meet you two yesterday. (I was in the group of day hikers you met around lunchtime.) Thanks for sharing your journey. I’m glad you found a safe place to stay out of the wind- it got very wild! Blessings to you both as you continue on this amazing, once-in-a-lifetime adventure!

You two are doing such a great job with this Blog. The stunning pictures and stories of random human generosity is truly the best type of content!
