Appalachian Trail
In 2016, Sean was looking for a new book to read on his Kindle. Seeking an outdoor adventure book, he stumbled on a book about the first person to hike the entire length of the Grand Canyon. Upon completion, Kindle recommended a book about the Appalachian Trail. He read that one, read several more after, and was hooked. He decided to thru hike the Appalachian Trail the next year.
In February of 2017 he stepped on Springer mountain and headed north towards Maine, making memories, friends and earning the Trail name “The Purge”.
The five-month journey was documented on his blog “The Mountains are calling and I must go” at smd2017.wordpress.com.
The original blog posts from his Appalachian Adventure (slightly edited to correct trail weary typos committed at the end of long days!) have been moved here for easier viewing.

The morning started off very misty, humid and hot. Certainly didn’t expect weather like this in New Hampshire! On the climb up Smart Mountain, the trail and rocks were slick with moisture. It was like the mountain itself was sweating as much as I was. Luckily there...
The Omelet Guy! 6/19/2017
Woke up excited to hit the trail this morning. The four section hikers we met yesterday had told us about the Omelet Guy. Apparently he sets up a little kitchen just off the trail and cooks breakfast for hikers. We took off from the shelter, eager to make the six...

Today we tackled Mt Moosilauke. At 4,803 ft, it is the highest peak the trail has crossed since Virginia. The day began with a brief rain shower that lasted just long enough to soak everything. The trail itself seemed to climb straight up the mountain. No switchbacks...

Started the day with a climb up Mt Wolfe. The terrain wasn’t bad, aside from a lot of mud in the beginning. There were footbridges, but it was so wet and soggy that many of the foot bridges were falling apart. After coming down from Mt Wolf there was a very nice...
Franconia Ridge 6/22/2017
Today was my favorite section on the trail so far, Franconia Ridge. Started with a steady, rocky climb up Haystack Mountain to get to the beginning of Franconia Ridge. Walking out onto the ridge was amazing. The peaks of Mt Lincoln and Mt Lafayette stretched out...

Woke up to rain, wind and fog at the hut. Spent most of breakfast working out a back up plan to get off the mountain if the storms persisted. The rain slowed a bit, so Rabbit and K headed out and climbed Mt Guyot in the rain and fog. The rain eventually tapered off as...

The morning started with a threat of rain as I hit the trail. It initially held off as I climbed up to Webster cliffs. By the time I made it up, the wind really picked up as a storm blew closer. I took some quick pictures before continuing on, hoping to get up and...
Mt Washington 6/25/2017
The first challenge of the day was the famed Mt Washington. The morning started off cold, windy and very foggy with a threat of thunderstorms and hail. Not ideal conditions for trekking up a mountain renowned for its extreme weather (highest recorded wind speed in...
6/26/2017
The temperature dropped overnight to the thirties, even lower with the wind blowing across the Mountains. Karaoke, Luna, Spice and I all left together in the morning to tackle Mt Madison. The fog was thick and the wind drove the temperatures into the 20s as we...

Today was the first day in the Whites that started out with clear sunny weather. It was great weather for a steep, difficult climb up to Carter Dome and the Carter Peaks We slipped and slid all over the steep rock faces that dotted the trail. In between peaks lay...
Zero day 6/28/2107
Took a zero day today in Gorham NH to rest and resupply with Karaoke, Spice and Luna. Going to hit the trail fresh tomorrow.
Last day in New Hampshire! 6/29/2017
Got a late morning start out of Gorham today. There was about an 1800ft ascent leaving town but the trail was pretty nice to start. Rain threatened all day, but luckily most of it skirted by. It always interesting to see the rain storms from a high vantage point....
Mahoosuc Notch 6/30/2017
Started the day with a nice view from the shelter while making breakfast. The first half of the day was a steep, rough climb up Mt Success. We ended up above the clouds looking out across the mountains. After the summit, we crossed through some alpine bogs. They were...
7/1/2017
The day started with a very rough climb up the Mahoosuc Arm. It may have been the roughest part of the trail so far. Covering 1600ft of elevation in just a mile and a half. After the arm, we met back up with a Karoake and Luna at a shelter for a late lunch. Spice and...

After the thunderstorm ordeal the day before, we decided to put in a short, 5 mile day to Andover, Maine to resupply and square away our gear. It was actually a nice day, the sun was out and the humidity dropped. Spice and I hiked on, with plans for Karaoke and Luna...
7/3/2017
Today started off great, we got a hitch out of Andover back to the trail and found a ziploc bag with blueberry pancakes sitting on the AT signpost. We had a relatively easy 1500ft climb to start the day. It brought us past several Alpine Ponds. The trail then dove up...
7/4/2017
We planned a 17 mile day to end up at a shelter near a pond that had a sandy beach. We planned a 4th of July party complete with a beach bonfire, sparklers and some adult beverages we packed out from town. We started early with a river crossing near camp. The trail...
7/5/2017
Planned a short resupply hiking 9 miles to Rangley, resupplying then 2 more miles to the Piazza leanto for the night. The short day was highlighted by stereotypical Maine mud and roots all day. There was a youth group nearby that asked if it was ok to use our...
7/6/2017
We planned a long 17 mile day for today. (Well that's long in the rugged terrain of Southern Maine anyway) Karaoke and Luna got started a little before Spice and I. We hit the trail and immediately got detoured by a side trail to “The Caves”. It was a section of huge...

Today was a milestone day, I passed the 2,000 mile mark! It has been an incredible journey so far, its almost bittersweet counting down miles instead of counting up now. In true Maine fashion, the stretch of trail that sat at the 2,000 mile mark was full of mud and...
7/8/2017
After hearing about a line of thunderstorms moving through the area, we decided to hang around town until the afternoon. The plan was to hike up to Horn pond leanto, about five miles up the trail. It would leave us near the top of the Bigalow Mt Horns. Karaoke,...
7/9/2017
We had a long day planned of nearly 19 miles, up over the Bigelow mountains and down to the West Carry Pond leanto. My knee felt ok, until we hit the first climb. I wasn’t able to push off on it to get up over the steep rocky sections. I had to step up with my right...
7/10/2017
Woke up early so we could make to the Kennebec river ferry before it stopped running for the day. The terrain was pretty easy. My knee felt stronger and didn’t hurt as bad road. It wound around several mountain ponds. We made it to the river crossing by noon, in time...
7/11/2017
Had a short day of 13 miles planned. The knee felt better, though it was still a long day hiking through the heat. There were a couple decent climbs, the forest floor covered in tree roots and rocks. There were a couple of bald hill tops in the middle of the day that...
7/12/2017
Had an 18 mile day into Monson, Maine. The last town before the One Hundred Mile Wilderness. The trail was pretty flat with some rolling hills as it followed the Piscataquis river most of the day. We had to ford the river several times throughout the day. There were...
Zero Day in Monson 7/13/2017
Woke up to rain, great day for a zero! We laid around after breakfast watching movies. After lunch we resupplied and planned out a food drop roughly halfway through the wilderness on a logging road. It has been an incredible adventure so far, it is hard to believe...
7/14/2017 The Final Leg
Heading into the hundred mile wilderness today. We are planning 6 nights to make it through. Taking a little extra time to enjoy it. I can’t wait to do some trout fishing! Hopefully catching enough for dinner one night. Speaking of food, most of my resupply is below....
7/14/2017 to 7/2072017 The 100 Mile Wilderness!
It was a long, difficult, yet fun filled week working our way through the 100 Mile Wilderness. 7/14 We started with one last breakfast in town before shuttling back to the trailhead. (Left to right: Chocolate Rain, Karaoke, Luna, Spice and me) There seemed to be a...
End of the Line! 7/21/2017
The day has finally arrived! It took a little over 5 months and 2,184 miles but we are finally ready to hike up mt Katahdin and reach the end of the Appalachian trail! At 5,267 ft, it is the highest peak in Maine. It has an elevation gain of more than 4,000 feet in...
