Appalachian Trail

In 2016, Sean was looking for a new book to read on his Kindle. Seeking an outdoor adventure book, he stumbled on a book about the first person to hike the entire length of the Grand Canyon. Upon completion, Kindle recommended a book about the Appalachian Trail. He read that one, read several more after, and was hooked. He decided to thru hike the Appalachian Trail the next year.

In February of 2017 he stepped on Springer mountain and headed north towards Maine, making memories, friends and earning the Trail name “The Purge”.

The five-month journey was documented on his blog “The Mountains are calling and I must go” at smd2017.wordpress.com.

The original blog posts from his Appalachian Adventure (slightly edited to correct trail weary typos committed at the end of long days!) have been moved here for easier viewing.

Woke up at 4:30am, to a couple rain drops hitting my face. It wasn’t supposed to rain, so I hadn’t put my tarp up. I instantly went into crisis mode and set my tarp up in record  time. My quilt stayed dry, but part of the hammock, under quilt and everything I had...

Last day in Pennsylvania!!!! 5/21/2017

Started the day by destroying the continental breakfast at the hotel.  I hung around the hotel for a bit more, getting my gear ready. On the way out of town,  I stopped at the Apple Pie Bakery again. Leaving town,  I crossed the Delaware river and finally left PA! The...

5/22/2017

Had breakfast at the Mohican Outdoor Center before hitting the trail.  It was misting as I left  and would rain off and on all day. I passed plenty of places that probably had great views on a sunny day. The trail was pretty nice for the most part. Late in the day,  I...

5/23/2017

After a windy night, I woke up early to see the sunrise, it turned out, Sunrise Mountain did not have the best views, but I did see some amazing colors. After watching the sunset, it was time for breakfast.  The night before, I had tied a cord to my food bag and...

5/24/2017

I stopped by the general store in town for a breakfast sandwich while waiting for the town hall to open. I would definitely recommend stopping in for a quick bite if you are hiking through. Once the hall opened I stopped by to inquire about the camera. Turns out it...

Started the day with a hike up Black Mountain. It was a clear morning and you could see all the way back to New York City. It was hard to capture with a cell phone, you could see it a lot clearer in person. The terrain was similar to the day before, rolling hills,...

100th day on Trail! 5/28/2017

Today is my 100th day on the trail! I was slowed up by weather a bit early on, but overall I’m pretty happy with the pace and progress so far. It is getting harder and harder to recognize the myself in pictures though! This was from the first week on the trail: And...

5/29/2017

Today started off cool and gloomy,  quickly turning to rain for half the day. On the first 500ft climb of the day, I came across my favorite sign so far… The trail soon turned muddy making progress very slow and difficult. At one point, I slipped and nearly slid into...

Last day in Connecticut 6/2/2017

Started the morning with a climb to the summit of Bear Mountain. It is the highest point in Connecticut and there is an old stone monument at the top. The descent was pretty tough, in some spots, it was a near vertical climb down rock faces slick with water running...

Last day in Massachusetts! 6/7/2017

Woke up to clear(ish) skies at the lodge. For the first time since we got there, you could actually see more than 100ft into the distance! The fog soon rolled back in,  but at least the rain had stopped. We hit the trail and soon found it to be a mess from the...

6/8/2017

Today was really muddy and wet again to start the day.  The trail was still flooded in many places. We had to hike up several miles of trail that better resembled a mountain stream.  The water was cold and after a few minutes, I couldn’t feel my feet. I kept...

6/9/2017

Woke up early to avoid the biting gnats, but was surprised to find them out, even on a cool morning. The day started with a climb up Stratton mountain. It was on this summit that James Taylor came up with the concept of Long Trail, which would eventually inspire the...
