Appalachian Trail
In 2016, Sean was looking for a new book to read on his Kindle. Seeking an outdoor adventure book, he stumbled on a book about the first person to hike the entire length of the Grand Canyon. Upon completion, Kindle recommended a book about the Appalachian Trail. He read that one, read several more after, and was hooked. He decided to thru hike the Appalachian Trail the next year.
In February of 2017 he stepped on Springer mountain and headed north towards Maine, making memories, friends and earning the Trail name “The Purge”.
The five-month journey was documented on his blog “The Mountains are calling and I must go” at smd2017.wordpress.com.
The original blog posts from his Appalachian Adventure (slightly edited to correct trail weary typos committed at the end of long days!) have been moved here for easier viewing.

Woke up to warmer temperatures and alot of fog. Most of the fog was below me though and made for some incredible views. I noticed a listing in the guidebook for a campground (Middle Creek campground) a short distance from the trail and hitched a ride over around lunch...

Started the day with a climb up Apple Orchard Mountain. At over four thousand feet, it was the highest climb I have had in a couple weeks. At the top was a radar station. From there, the trail wound down through the Thunder Ridge Wilderness. Immediately “Thunderstruck...

With rain in the forecast all day, I decided to hike back to Glascow and make it a resupply day. On the hike back I met a turtle! (He was a little camera shy though)

Started the day with a long climb up Bluff Mountain. There was a threat of rain all day, bit luckily it held off. There were several lookout points on the way up, that provided some great views of the James river flowing through the mountains. The trail got a little...

It rained all night long, finally slowing up a bit around 8am. I was able to get packed up and hit the trail around 9am. The trail was muddy and the little stream I had camped near had turned into a muddy torrent of water. Soon after I got back on the trail, it began...

It was really windy and rainy overnight again. Stayed in the hammock as long as I before getting up. I packed up in a light rain and made breakfast on the shelter. They had actually gotten rained on a bit overnight when the wind shifted. I hit the trail after 9am in...

Woke up to the sound of….birds! For the first time in three days, it wasn’t raining. Packed up and walked over to the brewery where they had a hiker breakfast for $5 After eating, they drove us back to the trail. It started off with a nice flat section to warm up on...

Today marked the beginning of the Shenandoah’s! After signing in at the self registration box and attaching my permit to my pack, I was ready to go. The trail pretty much went up and down small hills in the woods all day long, occasionally crossing the Skyway near...

Woke up to clear skies and sunshine, that never gets old! Early in the morning, I came across a rocky outcropping with great views of the valley below. I scrambled up to the top and had a great view to start the day. After digesting lunch, I hit the trail again and...

Had lightning and thunder overnight, but the rain stayed to the north. The morning was a bit overcast, but I did find a decent view early on. There were deer tracks all over the trail in the morning and eventually I ran into one. I stopped for lunch at a campground...

Started the morning with a couple mile hike to the Skyland Resort after hearing they had an all you can eat breakfast buffet on the weekends. There was cereal, fruit, pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes and biscuits/sausage gravy. I must have walked back...

It was really windy overnight. At one point, around 3am, the wind rocked the hammock so hard, it woke me up. I got an early start and planned to stop at a wayside a couple miles away to eat breakfast on a picnic table and use a real bathroom However, when I got...

Had a great pancake breakfast made by Scott at the hostel, before heading back out on the trail. The first five miles or so, were very flat, through a forest of towering trees and made for some easy hiking. The trail passed over an active railway. Luckily, I didn’t...
Last day in Virginia! 5/3/2017
Despite being pretty congested from allergies the day before, I slept pretty good. I got back on the trail and passed over a stream on a neat little foot bridge. I soon came to a section of trail known as “The Roller Coaster”. A section full of hills over the...

Today was a short day, roughly 13 miles into Harpers Ferry, the unofficial halfway point on the trail. The trail into town was pretty rocky at points, but not too steep. I worked my way down to the Potomac and crossed on a large bridge. I worked my way up to the...
Zero Days 5/5-5/6 2017
I took two zero days outside of Harpers Ferry to rest, resupply and replace some gear. I went out to REI today so I could buy new socks and swap out my shoes. The insoles had gotten messed and the tread was starting to wear down. Probably could have went a little...
Back to the Trail 5/7
After two days off near Harpers Ferry, it was time to hit the trail again. The trail went through town, over the bridge and along a canal, providing some level easy hiking. At some point I crossed into Maryland, though I don't remember seeing a sign. So now in my...

Got an early start today, hitting the trail about 6am. I walked confidently through the forest, after being assured of the low potential for forest fires today. I had been looking forward to this section of trail for a while, as it takes you near the original...
Last Day in Maryland! 5/9/2017
Started off the day, by making a wrong turn from the trail leading out of the shelter. Walked about a half mile the way I had come in yesterday before I realized the mistake. It was the first time in the whole trip that I had backtracked like that. After a couple...
Halfway Point! 5/10/2017
My alarm went off and my first thought was, PANCAKES! I quickly packed up camp and started the couple miles down trail towards town. On the way down I checked my phone and Mike, who follows me Instagram, saw that I was going to the restaurant and left trail magic!...
Halfway Point Bonus Post!
After reaching the halfway point, I wanted to take some time to send out some thank yous, as well as type up a gear review for those that have asked (and patiently waited for) First of all, I want to thank my family and friends back home for all the support they have...
5/11/2017
The trail started off pretty easy in the morning, though it did start raining after a couple hours. After crossing some train tracks, the trail turned uphill. The top of the ridgeline was full of boulders and was a pretty good scramble up, over and around them. After...

After getting a ride back into town, Fresh, Karaoke and I ate breakfast at a little café. Afterwards, they took off for the trail and I hung back to fish in the lake in town. I only had a spool of line, a little float and some jigs/flies, but I did pretty good,...

Woke up to rain still falling so we waited it out on the shelter for a couple hours before hitting the trail. When it let up a bit, Fresh, Karaoke and I hit the trail for the wet, rocky three mile descent into Duncannon. We split up in town, they went to resupply...
5/14/2017
Got a decent start, leaving at 7am this morning. Despite the dry forecast, it drizzled off and on all morning. Fresh, Karaoke and Fifty pushed ahead with plans for a big 30+ mile day. I had a more modest 22 mile day planned. I passed a sign that graded the...

Started the day with a cool little green tunnel. The trail crossed the Swatara river on a neat iron bridge. Afterwards, the trail got very rocky and would stay that way most of the day When the trail did get less rocky, it was muddy or completely flooded out. I stayed...

Started the day with a great breakfast cooked by Jody at the Rock N Sole hostel. Then Craig dropped me off back at the trail. Once again the trail was rocky all day. There was a pretty steep climb about midday. With the warming temperatures and the rocks, it was a...
My Birthday! 5/17/2017
Woke up to the sound of birds chirping under the pavilion. I can only assume they were singing happy birthday! I walked down to 3 C’s Family restaurant for breakfast. After breakfast I stopped by the barbershop in town to meet the owner Frank. Didn’t get a haircut...

Woke up at 4:30am to try and beat the heat a little bit. It would eventually get over 90 degrees again. The terrain kept getting rockier (yes it is actually possible!) I stopped at a small spring for water in the morning and made my own little water spigot with a cut...

Started the day with breakfast at Bert's before heading towards the steep climb up from the Lehigh gap. About half way up, I had to strap my trekking poles to my pack so I could literally climb up the trail. The highlight was about a 20ft tall section of rock wall...
