Started the morning with a climb to the summit of Bear Mountain. It is the highest point in Connecticut and there is an old stone monument at the top.
The descent was pretty tough, in some spots, it was a near vertical climb down rock faces slick with water running from a spring.
The effort was rewarded at the bottom though, as the trail ran through a narrow valley alongside Sawmill Broom. It was a beautiful stream ran beneath the pine trees, cutting through the rock formations and pouring over waterfalls and cascades every hundred feet or so.
At the end of the ravine, I crossed over the stream and into Massachusetts!
The state welcomed me with a steep climb up to Race Ledges and the summit of Mt Everett.
After the summit, I ran into this little guy. After a little coaxing he finally moved off the trail.
Later in the day I was walking along an active pasture when suddenly a huge bull appeared by the fence.
After crossing some train tracks, I made to a road just outside Great Barrington. I hitched a ride to the local grocery store, resupplied, ate dinner then walked over to the VFW.
Everyone was very friendly and I stayed a bit longer then I wanted to. Ended up hiking a couple miles in the dark, before stealth camping off the trail near mile 1522.
