Started the day with a nice view from the shelter while making breakfast.

The first half of the day was a steep, rough climb up Mt Success. We ended up above the clouds looking out across the mountains.

After the summit, we crossed through some alpine bogs. They were so muddy and flooded that some of the footbridge were actually floating! Some were rotting away and made for tricky maneuvering to avoid falling into mud that would sink you over two feet.

The trail was very steep, at some points there were rebar steps driven into large rock walls to help climb otherwise nearly impassable sections of trail.

Later in the day,  We crossed the border into Maine!

After lunch,  Spice and I decided to push on and go through Mahoosuc Notch before finding a camping spot.

The notch was a steep ravine about a mile long and full of large boulders ranging in size from car to house size. There wasn’t always a direct route, some spots were like a puzzle with several different routes to choose from.

Several spots required us to take our packs off and pass them through to each other.

A couple areas even had snow/ice still!

It took nearly an hour and a half to traverse the notch.  We camped at a spot near a stream just past the notch.
