Day 52: 5/15/2021

by | May 19, 2021 | Pacific Crest Trail | 2 comments

This morning we climbed up from Chicken Spring Lake and were able to view the lake for part of the climb.

Within a few miles we left Inyo National Forest and crossed into Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

We continued to ascend most of the day.

Eventually, we drew closer to mountains surrounding Mt. Whitney where we planned to camp tonight.

Within a few miles of the junction to Mt. Whitney we found this gate.

We weren’t sure what the gate was protecting. We just climbed around it. Right outside of Crabtree Meadow we met our first marmot! He posed for some pictures.

We hiked a mile up a side trail to camp near the ranger station by Mt. Whitney. We’ll be climbing Mt. Whitney tomorrow!

I saw Mr. Marmot on IG and wondered what type of animal he was – I’ve never seen one before. Beautiful views! Are you able to identify any of the trees? I wouldn’t know an alder from an aspen! Im looking forward to some pix of sequoias – those I think I’ll recognize by their size.

I don’t know any trees, but some of the trees with twisting trunks may be sequoias.
