Day 7: 3/31

Woke up to a very cold and windy morning. It was hard to keep our stove burning, so we built a rock wall to shield it a bit.

A beautiful sunrise helped offset the wind and cold.

And hot coffee didn’t hurt either!

The trail stayed around 5,000 ft most of the morning giving us great views of the mountains in the distance.

We could just make out snow on the furthest mountains.

There were flowers and cacti all over the trail today.

Our only water source for the day was a concrete block with a hose that trickled water into plastic bottles. It took a while, but we eventually got enough to carry on.

We planned on hiking about 15 miles today, but every potential campsite we find was either too rocky, too small or not flat enough.

After hiking an extra mile and a half, Amy found us a great spot to camp and we settled in for the night.

The only downside of our site was these little pokey, cactus-like balls that littered the ground. I discovered then the hard way, when one of them punctured my camp shoe and stabbed me in the foot. I bestowed the name “spite balls” upon them and vowed to retire the camp shoes until we start hitting water crossings.

It was a 16.5 mile day that saw us drop over 2,000 ft in elevation.

Great sunrise picture! Amy drinking coffee looks like me drinking bourbon. That pic’s a keeper!
